Today we're going to talk about the basics of Instagram. Follow these guidelines to maximize your Instagram profile, content and posting to build your following and your business.
In order for people to want to follow you, you need to hit the following 3 points:
- Interesting profile
- Great content
- Consistent posting
Your Instagram profile is like a first impression of your business. Make sure your profile is set to Public. You need to be seen and heard, this is business. This is your business account so you may want a seperate personal account for family/friends.
Your Photo: It needs to be a photo of you, professional (catering to your audience) smiling, social. I suggest that this be the same photo you use across all social media for brand recognition.
Your Description: You have 160 characters to make an impact. Your bio needs to make it clear who you are and what you do. Emojis are great to add color and personality. Don't forget to add a call to action to let your followers know how to interact with you. For example: "Click link below for more info!"
Your Website: This is super important. Use the Website/URL space your most valuable asset. It is the ONLY clickable link in Instagram! Make sure they go to a specific place to capture them (sales funnel, opt in page, facebook group). Change this link when you need to for promotions, contests, campaigns etc.
A great example of these points is Bark Box! They have emojis, a call to action and a link directly to their sign up.
Your Instagram feed is a representation of your brand/business. Posting high quality, cohesive photos/images will attract more followers.
Inspirational quotes are the easiest place to get started. You can find them in phone apps, googling or on Pinterest to name a few.
You’ll probably want a content creation tool for your computer and one for your phone. My faves are Canva.com on my computer and WordSwag (now available for Android!) on my phone.
I highly recommend you type the description for your post on the note pad of your phone. It helps spacing and you can re-use verbiage. Just copy and paste!
The #1 most important thing I can share with you is consistency. Post at the same times every day and post the same amount of photos. Don’t lump posts on top of each other. And don’t skip days (all 7 days).
If your new to Instagram, try starting with once a day. Your goal if you are super focused is 3-5 per day, 7 days a week.
Hootsuite or Later are great tools for scheduling your posts. Note: Instagram's terms and conditions require you to use their app to post. Both Hootsuite and Later copy and paste into the Instagram app.
Find a schedule that works for you, but you’ve got to be consistent!
